Difference between DTH and rotary drilling

2026-06-25 17:26:14

DTH drilling and rotary drilling are used in completely different ground conditions — rotary is mainly for soft to medium formations, while DTH is designed for hard rock and deep drilling.

That’s the real key difference. On most job sites, you don’t choose based on preference, you choose based on whether you’re drilling soil or rock.

Rotary drilling is mainly used in soft ground conditions.

You’ll see it in shallow water wells, agricultural irrigation wells, and general groundwater projects where the formation is mostly soil, sand, or soft clay.

In these cases, cutting through the ground with rotation is enough. The drilling process is smoother, the equipment is simpler, and the cost per meter is lower.

But once hard rock layers appear, the drilling speed drops fast and tool wear increases.

DTH drilling is used when the formation becomes hard rock.

Typical applications include mining blast holes, quarry drilling, and deep water wells where rock layers are thick and difficult to break.

The hammer works directly at the bottom of the hole, so the impact energy goes straight into the rock. This is why it stays efficient even in deep or hard formations.

It’s more powerful in rock, but it also requires an air compressor system and a higher equipment setup compared to rotary drilling.

So how to choose?

The choice is actually very simple in real projects.

If the ground is mostly soil or soft layers, rotary drilling is the right tool. It keeps the job simple and cost-effective.

If you are drilling in hard rock or need deeper and faster penetration, DTH drilling is the better option.

In real engineering work, the decision is usually based on one question: Are you drilling soil or rock? Once that is clear, the choice becomes obvious.
